Let’s face it, the summers in the desert are miserable, it is difficult to be creative when you can’t get outside and explore locations or make portraits for fear of you or your models melting.
In this presentation I am going to share with you a few ways that I have found to stay creative while staying inside in the comfort of your air-conditioned home. My set ups are simple and often times I use window light and my dining room table. I’ll also share some post-processing techniques to put the finishing touches on your images. We will walk through my entire process from finding a subject, to setting up the shot, lighting, composing and capture all the way through to Lightroom processing, Photoshop editing using a few 3rd party plugins and finally create the final presentation ready for submission to the next image competition.
I was first introduced to photography while in college in the early 80’s. A required intro to Black and White photography course ignited my passion for photography. My wife and I owned a portrait and wedding studio, she was the primary photographer and I was the behind the scenes guy while I maintained a full-time job.
By day, I am a retoucher and project manager working mainly in the fashion and catalog industry. For years I have developed my retouching skills to meet the vision of clients for their publications. A few years ago I decided to start creating images for my own vision and develop my own style. I discovered that I needed inspiration, that’s when I decided to join AZPPA to be surrounded by other creative individuals. Initially the idea of entering image competitions were out of the question, how could my images ever stack up to photographers that have been entering competitions for years? With much encouragement from a few members I did enter and some of my entries did pretty well. I am working toward a Master of Photography Degree with PPA and should meet all the requirements to receive it at Imaging USA in January 2022.
