Photo TechniquesOutdoor Portrait Lighting - By David Lloyd Miki DeVivo Tutoring Session On Wednesday, Jan 20, 2010 I met with Miki DeVivo at the Scottsdale Civic Center for an afternoon Tutoring Session in finding outdoor Portrait light and the technique of separating the background from the subject with a medium telephoto lens and shallow depth of field. Miki is an aspiring member of AZPPA and brought her Nikon and zoom lens, to not only be a model for our One on One Session, but to also participate with a Hands On approach to learning Outdoor Portrait techniques . . . We enjoyed a refreshing and informational afternoon, filled with finding good locations and lighting and trading places being subject and photographer. We explored, not only lighting, watching for useful reflective surfaces for Key lights, but ways to work with a difficult background be careful selection of camera angle and depth of field, we also opened a dialog of interaction to elicit expression, mood and character of the images. As the light changed from direct sun to overcast within a few minutes time frame, we explored working with the changes, keeping our eyes open for new opportunities of light quality and supporting backgrounds. Later in the day, as the sky became the light source, with the setting sun, we were forced to go to a higher ISO rating and 2.8 aperture. As Mikis’ lens was a variable aperture with focal length, I loaned her my camera, so she could explore the advantages of a Prime Zoom Lens with fixed aperture. At 2.8 and around 200mm, we talked about setting the drive of the camera to multiple frames per second, as getting accurate focus with such a shallow depth of field can be a trick with a single exposure. We set the focus points to multiple as well for greatest focus sensitivity and fired away, insuring several sharp frames with selective focus. Miki expressed her appreciation for the outing and Tutoring Session with a canister of home made cookies, which I have been enjoying immensely. Thank you Miki! There is a lot to learn in Digital Photography and sharing knowledge personally with others in our AZPPA Community raises the Craft of our Members as a whole. David Lloyd Photography |
