    Image Critique

NOTE: Image Submission Deadline: 7/31 6PM

There are few educational opportunities that help improve your understanding of image quality then print critique and print competitions.

During image critique, members may submit up to 4 of their images (digitally submitted through the website) to be evaluated by our panel of judges. After reviewing each image and giving a 'thumbs up' or 'thumbs down' score, each judge will in turn discuss every image that has been submitted to help the maker improve upon the image and potentially prepare it for higher level competitions.

There is no charge to members to submit images for this image critique. Non-members may enter up to 4 images as well for a fee of $20 (in addition to meeting fee).

Submitting for Image Critique is easy: Just follow these simple steps to upload your images:

    1) Go to and click on 'free registration of new user' if you have not already used, otherwise log in with your exisitng User ID and Password (this is the same system we use for Arizona State Image Competition)

    2) Once you are registered and logged on, click on the AZPPA box (shows August 1 2017 as date).

    3) Select if you are a member, and also if this is the first time you are entering an AzPPA image event.

    4) Click on the 'Create New Image Entry' button, then enter the information prompted (title of your image, category, and select if digital effects performed by you or not).

    5) Click on 'Create New Entry' button and then upload your image.

Repeat the above steps for up to 4 images you would like to have critiqued.

It's that simple. If you are new to image critique and competitions, start your journey now towards improving your photography and taking the first steps towards earning your PPA Masters Of Photography or Master Artist degrees at the International Print Competition.

By receiving feedback on your images now, you will be better prepared for submitting your images at State, District and International Levels (it is the International Level where your images can start earning merits towards earning a PPA degree).

If you are experienced with image critiques and competitions, now is the time to have qualified judges help you understand ways to improve your images before you enter them at State, District or International.

Need help with uploading or registered, or not sure where to start? We are here to help you. Just contact Bob Zimmerlich at with your questions.

    Fall Festival 2017

    October 28th Thru October 29th

Exclusive Photographic Access To Kartchner Caverns Plus Tombstone AZ

Kartchner Caverns does not allow photography on their tours. They are very strict in maintaining a pristine environment within the caves and normally do not allow cameras and lights.

Through Bruce Roscoe’s diligent efforts, they have agreed to provide AzPPA with special and exclusive access to the caves for 4 hours (as a condition for this exclusive access, each photographer attending will be required to provide 4 high resolution images to AzPPA by Nov 27th which will be distributed to Kartchner Caverns State Parks for their marketing purposes. An accident waiver and agreement to these terms are required to be signed by all attendees).

We will also be allowed to use flashlights for some light painting opportunities. Very few photographers have the opportunity to photograph these caves, providing attendees with a unique experience.

We will also be heading out to Tombstone and Boot Hill for some 19th century wild west fun. There are many photographic opportunities throughout the main street of Tombstone and surrounding areas, and there are several events planned for our group (gunfight, trolley tour, boot hill visit - all included with your registration!).

Group code for hotel will be released upon registration for this event so that you may book your hotel room.

Transportation to these locations, hotel and food costs are the responsibility of each attendee and is not included with this registration fee.

Registration Begins April 4th For Members

(Non-Members Can Register Starting April 18th)

    AzPPA On-The-Road Series

    In The Darkroom

Journey back in time with AzPPA to the days when fixer, stop baths, and enlargers where the mainstay of most professional photographers.

Arnold Williams will be our 'time travelling guide' as we explore and learn the techniques used to develop film in the darkroom. Even though this is not a technique most photographers use anymore, it is fascinating to know how images were transformed in the film days and where our terminologies so well known today in the digital world actually come from (burning and dodging sound familiar?).

This meeting will take place in an actual darkroom learning lab.

Actual location (it will be in Phoenix) and Time will be announced shortly.

Leveraging Todays Technology For More Creative Images

    Bob Coates.M.Photog.Cr.MA., CPP

We have more creative tools than ever built into our cameras. The gear is becoming lighter, faster and sharper than ever. Technology is making it possible for making more Creative Images than ever before.

We can now remotely control the camera via wifi and see what the camera is seeing. Pull 8MP stills from 4K video, pick focus after the fact, create Time-lapse videos in camera. Capture an image after something has already happened. (I know it was hard for Bob to believe too!)

Intelligent Auto can determine the subject matter and give preprogrammed settings so you can concentrate on composition. Let’s not forget post-processing techniques to work on the images after capture. It’s a great time to push the envelope!

Bob will share how he’s combining the new tech from Panasonic Lumix Cameras, Adobe Photoshop and Aurora 2017 HDR software to make photography fun again.

    About The Speaker:

Bob Coates - M.Photog.M.Artist. Cr., CPP

    Lumix Luminary

Coates started his official pro career in March of 1995 after picking up and putting down a camera for the previous Thirteen years. Based in the Caribbean for the beginning three years of business Bob concentrated on commercial photography. He was dragged kicking and screaming into the wedding side of the business and then embraced weddings. Upon his move to Sedona, Arizona to get out of the path of hurricanes weddings were mixed with some commercial work. Coming full circle Bob is back to concentrating solely on commercial projects and creating an art décor line and leaving weddings behind.

Articles for magazines and books authored by Bob are part of how he gives back to the photographic community. In addition, Bob has presented programs from Hawaii to the Caribbean including National platforms at Imaging USA and other venues. Judging local and International print competitions is another way Bob has shares his expertise in the industry.

Bob has always believed in giving back to the community using his photographic skills. Among lots of community projects a couple notable ones were a calendar based on the movie Calendar Girls that raised money and garnered lots of community awareness and National press for the Sedona Arts Center. He also photographed, designed, printed and sold a calendar for the Sedona Community Center raising almost $10,000.

Bob currently lives and works from his residential studio in Sedona, AZ with his wife Holly.
